LinkedIn Optimization Checklist

Headline

  • Use the golden formula: JOB TITLE | GEOGRAPHICAL SCOPE | INDUSTRY | SUBSECTOR | KEY DIFFERENTIATOR
  • Ensure job title is commonly understood and widely used
  • Include geographical responsibility (e.g., EMEA, Global, US)
  • Specify industry and sub-industry (e.g., Medical Devices, Cardiovascular)
  • Add a key differentiator or standout accomplishment
  • Stay within the 200-character limit

About Section

  • Create a list of at least 100 specific experiences, projects, industries, and sub-industries called keywords
  • Include keywords relevant to your target roles and industry
  • Use the first three lines to engage the reader
  • Incorporate as many relevant keywords as possible while maintaining readability
  • Update regularly with new experiences and skills

Experience Section

  • Use standardized, industry-recognized job titles
  • Connect each role to the appropriate company profile on LinkedIn
  • Highlight key achievements with concrete data points, pack each description with the same keywords you used in the about section (keyword repetition is key)
  • Quantify your impact id possible (e.g., team size, budget managed, revenue increase)
  • Present job history in reverse-chronological order
  • Provide clear start and end dates for each position
  • List multiple roles within the same company separately

Skills Section

  • Add up to 100 relevant skills
  • Focus on hard skills and industry-specific expertise
  • Remove generic or irrelevant skills
  • Don't bother with endorsements, they do not impact your visibility at all
  • Regularly review and update the skills list
  • Ensure all skills are listed in English

"Open to Work" Feature

  • Enable the feature and fill out job preferences
  • Choose the "Recruiters only" visibility setting
  • Be specific about target roles and industries
  • Keep an open mind to slightly different opportunities

Profile Activity

  • Log in to LinkedIn regularly (at least a few times a week
  • Make small tweaks to your profile regularly
  • Engage with others' content (like, comment, share)
  • Share your own content
  • Connect new professionals and headhunters in your industry (proximity in a headhunters network will impact visibility to that headhunter)
  • Respond promptly to recruiter messages

Profile Picture

  • Use a high-quality, professional headshot
  • Ensure the photo aligns with industry expectations
  • Avoid casual or outdated photos

Additional Best Practices

  • Properly designate interim assignments with "(a.i.)" after the job title
  • Regularly review and update your entire profile
  • Ensure consistency across all sections of your profile
